The US has dropped 10 spots in the 2024 ranking from the previous year, indicating a decline in press freedom. The report highlights that political authorities are not fulfilling their role as guarantors of the best possible environment for journalism, leading to a lack of reliable, independent, and diverse news and information. The US also faces pressure from the state or other political actors, with over 100 Palestinian reporters killed by the Israel Defence Forces in the war in Gaza being a significant example. The US media landscape is characterized by a concentration of ownership, prioritizing profits over public interest, and a decline in local news, which hurts diversity. Public confidence in the media has also fallen dangerously, with many states seeking to limit journalists' access to public spaces through proposed or enacted legislation.

The US is falling fast in an area that is a pillar of democracy. One of the reasons is the accumulation of media sites by a few wealthy people or companies. If there is no diversity of media, there can be no true sharing of factual news. The news will be whatever the wealthy owners, left or right, say it is. That spells the end of free press.

That's because so much of the press is controlled by leftist hacks not unlike yourself.

NYU Law School cancels free speech event on October 7 with Jewish speaker

New York University School of Law cancelled a Federalist Society event scheduled for Oct. 7 that concerned free speech and featured a conservative Jewish speaker, the school’s reasons for cancellation ranging from security to lack of space.

In a statement obtained by The Center Square, the event’s speaker, Ilya Shapiro, said: “I was grateful to the NYU students for inviting me to discuss my book and the crisis in higher education.”

Thank you Jim for exposing the leftwing media's assault on free speech.

Americans don't care about corporate media. . . . well, except some Boomers on the left.

We all know the agenda of corporate America, that is why there are more conservative and liberatarian members on this forum than leftists.

Leftists don't need to find out the truth, they can just be told what to think by the establishment press.

The point here is, if you are taking the opinion of a site that claims that the U.S. has less freedom of speech than the U.K., Canada or Australia?

You are clearly out of your ever-loving mind.

There is no way this is accurate as I saw Canada ranked fairly high, this is absurd to the point I almost felt like vomitting.

Canada has the least diverse ownership of media in the Western hemisphere, it is fiercely centrally controlled. Almost by definition this ensures a lack of freedom of media.

If they are this off on Canada, how far off are they on America?

You have multiple channels and an array of opinions and far more openness to free speech and challenge dogma of all types. This alone contributes to more diversity of thought.

Ownership governance

The CRTC governs media ownership in Canada - this excludes newspaper and internet media ownership. Media in Canada are owned by a small number of companies; each holds a diverse portfolio, including television, cable, radio, newspaper, magazine and internet sites. There are a limited number of community broadcasters that serve specific geographic or interest/cultural communities. Media ownership has changed in recent years due to a significant number of mergers and takeovers by industry giants. Such mergers have resulted in a significant decrease in the number of independent newspapers - from approximately 17% in the early 1990s to less than 1% today.

That’s far too high in my opinion. I want us down I. The 180-210 range.

If the media is leftwing all the time without any contrary viewpoint, you're good with this leftwing

All leftwing media countries get the highest ratings according to this leftwing publication. . US is low because FOX news is allowed to tell the truth. The truth is not allowed to be told in Marxist regimes.

Sweden is definitely over-rated on this list. It cannot really be 3 highest. My judgement would place it just a bit above the US.
