GAZA CITY (AFP) - Three Palestinian activists were killed early Sunday in an attack on an Israeli military post on the border between
Israel and the south of the
Gaza Strip, the group Committees of Popular Resistance announced.
Military sources in Jerusalem said several Israeli soldiers were also killed or wounded in the attack near the Sufa and Kerem Shalom crossing points.
Palestinian activists fired anti-tank rockets at an Israeli unit protecting the Kerem Shalom crossing point. An armoured vehicle was hit full-on, the military sources said without giving details.
Exchanges of fire were continuing while an Israeli army unit made an incursion into the Gaza Strip to chase the perpetrators of the attack, the sources added.
A spokesman for the Committees of Popular Resistance said they had carried out a "major, complicated joint operation" with the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, with many activists "attacking several Israeli military posts between Sufa and Kerem Shalom."
Three members of his Abu Mujahid group had been killed in the shooting while "some Israeli soldiers were killed in the attack" which was in reprisal for the targeted killing a few days ago of group leader Jamal Abu Samhadana.
The latest confirmed deaths bring to 5,120 the number of people killed since the start of the intifada in September 2000, most of them Palestinians, according to an AFP toll.
