My eldest daughter is an engineer for a big 3 automobile manufacturer. I get some tidbits of inside information that I probably shouldn't.

IMO, the future is hybrid electric cars. Electric assisted and extremely maneuverable.

Electric drive train with a small clean diesel engine to charge the batteries/frame. The frame of the car will be the battery. Perhaps even spherical tires that levitate the car in a magnetic field to reduce friction.

Criminals and teenaged hackers will try to make them fly and often fail spectacularly.

The only reliable transportation for all times of the year which doesn't use gas or cost an arm and a leg and can produce it's own replacement if given the opportunity.

Federally licenced police officers and active duty military personnel are allowed to fly Cessnas and small airplanes privately practically anywhere in Alaska.

Electrics for short hauls, hybrids for longer trips. Ownership of a car will be a rare and expensive proposition. Uber will go to self-driving cars and 99% of our driving will be by Uber (or something like it). All in 20-30 years.

You will drive with it to the next railway station to take a high speed train with your car into the next giga city with 500 mph. From the railway station there you will drive to your company and enter the lift. And then you will find out something terrible. You are in Scotland - and the lift has a voice recognition technology ...
