It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that digging yourself deeper into sand with more water pouring in, that you would become stuck in the sand. These two looked old enough to have known better.

If the hole is over 5 feet deep OSHA requires a trench box unless the sides of the hole are stable solid rock. They need to stop digging. Sorry about the dude's luck, but rules are rules.
