Asked about Republicans who say she is driving the shutdown, Ocasio-Cortez said:
"Well, if that’s the case, my office is open, and you are free to walk in and negotiate with me directly, because what I’m not going to do is tolerate four million uninsured Americans because Donald Trump decided one day that he wants to just make sure that kids are dying because they don’t have access to insurance.
"That’s what’s not gonna happen. And so, if those senators think that we’re having a shutdown because of me, they’re free to enter my office and negotiate, because what we’re not going to do is allow all of millions of people in this country to not be able to afford their insulin and their chemotherapy. So, come strike a deal with me, if that’s what they really think is going on."
First of all, it is cute that she thought that Republicans would be clamoring to negotiate away parts of the OBBB, after working so hard to get it passed. The shutdown puts pressure on Democrats from their constituents, who are largely dependent on federal spending for assistance with their lives or in many cases, their entire livelihoods. That pressure will grow exponentially come the fifteenth when paychecks do not go out, as they did on the 1st.
That would be a good time appear at AOC's door, ready to negotiate. Her mouth will water at a chance to be the heroine that restored Biden-level spending, Biden-era policies toward illegals, and COVID era subsidies for the Health Insurance companies, while ending the shutdown.
Of course the Republicans should drive a hard bargain. Especially knowing what she would really want is credit for lifting the shutdown and being tough on Republicans:
AOC: Will you restore funding for public broadcasting? It is only half a trillion dollars!
REPUBLICANS: No.
But we will offer 1.2 million a year to NPR starting in January, if they use the months of November and December to hire some journalists and producers and fire some until NPR starts producing middle of the road factual news reporting, with all opinion shows allowing both sides equal time, instead of being a mouthpiece for the far left. Funding will be at the rate of 100K per month, with with funding revokeable if they stray from that new format.
We'll say you drove a hard bargan to get that out of us.
AOC: Will you restore Obamacare subsidies and Medicaid to persons with legal status?
REPUBLICANS: No freebies for people who crossed the border.
But will will give them a thirty day grace period to leave the country before they are deported, and a free ride to the border if they get caught using ER for primary care. We'll also leak to he press that you were a fierce negotiator and we hope you do not primary Chuck Schumer because he is such a pushover.
AOC: Will you take away that work requirement for Medicaid?
REPUBLICANS: No.
But we will reduce it from twenty hours per week to eighteen and quietly tell the media on deep background that was your demand and your steely gaze convinced us that you would not back down, so we caved.
Throw this little perra a couple of bones and she will be your loyal pet.
