First the school. I believe it was constructed in 1926. The school serviced several cities. Hayward, CA, San Lorenzo, Ashland, Castro Valley (school of Rachel Maddow, much later when Castro Valley got their high schools), Mt. Eden, plus county area)

The sports track seen in the upper part was for practice. The regular lighted field is lower left, shown for baseball at the time of the photo. Also, we used it for a football field. I recall at one time some 6,000 students were there. Does it look like a college to you?

Castro Valley High School. 2023-2024, 2,842 students.

My high school. Fred T Foard, 2023-2024, 956 students. Howard Stern famously proclaimed it to be the most redneck High School in the country. They have tractor day at least twice a year. That is when students drive tractors to school, park them in the front. Mom was the first graduating class from that school, 1959. She heads up the high school reunion committee, 66 is coming up. Every living member of that class will be in attendance, except one, he sent his regrets. That is the way it works out here in the sticks.

Famous alumni, well, just one, John Reep, the comedian. But that is just it, that little school turns out some amazing people that have consistently changed the world. Mom graduated from there, myself and my siblings graduated from there, and all my sons graduated from Foard.

My oldest is a research scientist. One of his projects is additive manufacturing. 3D printing in metal, turbines mostly. He is leading a team out of MIT and he visits Oxford University. He meets with the person that created the raw material for his 3D printer, in Great Britain. That person also graduated from Fred T Foard. What a small world we live in.

Even notice that high schools followed the same design as prisons or insane asylums?
That is the inevitable result of designing for large numbers of students. Controlling them becomes more important than educating them.

Back in 1926, high school pretty much was considered “higher education”

Jack Del Rio graduated from Hayward, High. Jack coached the Oakland Raiders and now coaches a European team. His dad and were on the Varsity football team in 1956 plus his cousins also named Del Rio. Jack graduated from USC in Southern CA.
