"Trump’s DOJ demands Michigan voter data, Jocelyn Benson given two weeks to respond
The U.S. Department of Justice is demanding Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson hand over a copy of Michigan’s voter rolls and explain what her office is doing to keep ineligible voters off the rolls.
The Trump administration’s DOJ wants to scrutinize how Michigan election officials are maintaining the voter rolls and wants Benson to provide names of every official responsible for that work.
Other requests include questions about the state’s high voter registration rate, duplicate registrations and what the DOJ says is a below-average rate of removing people from the voter rolls.
Those demands by the DOJ were made in a Monday, July 21, letter to Benson obtained by MLive. The letter noted that states have an obligation under federal election law to provide this information and that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi can bring enforcement action for violations."
