Assets belonging to Colombian President Gustavo Petro and members of his inner circle have been frozen by the U.S. Treasury Department. This was done in late October 2025 as a result of U.S. sanctions targeting foreign nationals involved in the global illicit drug trade.
Details of the sanctions:
- The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) placed Petro, his wife Verónica Alcocer, and his son Nicolás Petro on its list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons.
- The action freezes any of their assets within U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits American companies and citizens from conducting financial transactions with them.
- The U.S. Treasury cited a "global illicit drug trade" and alleged that Petro has "allowed drug cartels to flourish" since taking office.
- In addition to the asset freeze, the sanctions also include a travel ban to the United States for those on the list.
Impact of the sanctions:
- Petro's lawyer, Daniel Kovalik, has confirmed that the financial sanctions are causing difficulties, with their "credit cards and bank accounts frozen".
- Kovalik also reported that a U.S.-affiliated fuel company refused to refuel the presidential plane in Spain, further complicating matters.
- In response, Petro has publicly stated that he holds no U.S. assets or bank accounts in the country and is unaffected by the sanctions.
- Colombian banks have also reportedly begun freezing the accounts of Petro and the others on the U.S. sanctions list, according to reports from late October 2025.
