The actual incident had very little in common with the movie. In the actual case, it was an honorable Marine who was nearly killed by dishonorable Marines.

They beat the shit out of him, broke several bones, and poured antifreeze down his throat. Thankfully, he survived.

The next day, a fighter jet landed on the Leeward side of the base, a Marine general disembarked, got into a vehicle, drove to the ferry and went to the Windward side, then fired the CO, the XO and the senior enlisted Marine (Sergeant Major). Then he got back in his vehicle, drove back to the ferry, came back to Leeward, got in his aircraft and took off.

All in less than two hours.
