Why do we keep electing these dumb asses? Flagging $2000 gives them permission to send $1,999 out of the country. All the cash being sent to Mexico by even legal immigrants should be stopped, also as it just harms our economy.

I just read President Trump is implementing a 1% tax on remittances in January. That isn't enough imo, but at least it's a start. That is in addition to the crackdown on suspicious remittances.

Of course as written, increasing the tax rate will make it more worth while to use other methods that are not taxable.

It was meant to be.

Take a look at the transactions that are taxed and those that aren’t.

It will reach a point where it becomes financially possible for third parties to transfer the money with no tax and then take a “transfer fee”. This would of course be a black market situation.

For example my daughter lives in Japan, instead of sending her money, I instead deposit it into my bank account. Then do an electronic transfer to her account. She withdraws the money in Japan. No tax since it was done via inter account transfer.

The tax only applies to physical type transfers: cash, money orders, and cashiers checks.
