Obviously you don't have the time or resources to go into all of the losing states to chip away at the broader electorate, but a few such rallies can make a difference. Who knows how many more votes it may have brought him outside these states simply because he shown the leadership and willingness to enter the mouth of the lion?
He went into California and New York twice and look at how much more red there are in both states. They are nearly purple states at this point.
