His poem relates he did not care when they did not come for him and walks us down a line where he did not care.

I decided to study his history.

He was a commander of a U-boat during WW1.
He supported Hitler when he came to power.
He was put into jail when he spoke against Hitler
He lived to a ripe old age of 92

I believe you read more than is factual into things like people usually do.

"Martin Niemöller is best known for writing First They Came, but he is a complicated figure. Initially an antisemitic Nazi supporter, his views changed when he was imprisoned in a concentration camp for speaking out against Nazi control of churches."

"Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) was a decorated German U-boat commander during World War I who later became a prominent Lutheran pastor and anti-Nazi dissident. As a commander of the UC-67 in 1918, he achieved success in sinking Allied ships and was awarded the Iron Cross First Class. Initially a Nazi supporter, he became a vocal critic of Hitler, resulting in his imprisonment in Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1937 to 1945"
