This unfolding government shutdown should be a real eye opener for the American people, the American public rightfully believed that the shutdown is a fight between the two parties over healthcare the Republicans believe the pot of money spent on healthcare is a pot of money that can pay for their aggressive tax cut policy to grow the economy and the Democrats believe the pot of money should remain used for healthcare because they rightfully believe that affordable healthcare is a fundamental human right for all people not just the healthy and young! Alarmingly the unfolding developments clearly indicate that President Donald Trump's top priority with the government shutdown is to break, eliminate, the Senate filibuster the rule in the Senate which requires sixty votes in the Senate to end debate on a bill and move the bill forward to an up or down vote on passage; this precious rule protects our country from wide swings in the law for our political parties have a Grand Canyon gap in policy views and as they take the reins of power in Washington and are able to completely implements their policy agenda into law. Clearly President Trump's agenda is to eliminate the filibuster and then pass a whole bunch of MAGA and extreme right-wing laws, what this means in a big picture sense is President Trump is seeking to expand his reputation with dramatic changes in America's laws at the expense of the best interest of the American people, it should make people sick that the country has a person with such depraved character in the Presidency!
What is the evidence that President Trump's top priority here is breaking the filibuster and not reopening and funding the government: President Trumps's refusal to enter into negotiations even though an abundance of rank-and-file Republicans in the Senate and the House want to because they know it is hurting them politically, his efforts to stoke and spotlight the pain of the shutdown - his refusal to use emergency funds to fund SNAP and then after the Judge orders the administration to use the funds he decides to only fund the SNAP accounts for people at fifty percent; sending Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy repeatedly out to do media interviews spotlighting in detail the negative impact of the shutdown on air traffic controllers, the Transportation Department has a Communication's Office that could readily handle informing the public but the emotional impact is much greater having the choir boy looking Mr. Duffy saying heartbreaking things like the controllers are worried about paying their mortgage and child-care and this shutdown if it continues will have a major negative impact for the Thanksgiving Holiday! President Trump
repeatedly selling to Republicans to eliminate the filibuster saying things like the Democrats are going to do it the first chance they get when get back the reins of power in Washington so lets get the jump on them, if we get rid of the filibuster we can pass hundred of Republican policy initiatives; totally disregarding the harm that will be done to the country because with the filibuster gone when the Democrats do retake power they can readily enact into law an extensive socialist agenda and of course pay for it with a massive tax agenda which long-term will lead to a less prosperous America and a lower standard of living for the American people because high taxes dramatically reduce economic activity and the jobs and higher earnings that such activity brings and all the residual effects and will almost certainly bring Ruby Red state seceding from the nation of America legitimately claiming this is not something they signed up for when they ratified the Constitution of the United States!
Just a passing suggestion on ending the government shutdown, this past week Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made an offer to end the shutdown by the Republicans agreeing to extend the Democrat created ACA enhanced premium tax credit for health insurance for just one year and Senate Majority John Thune resoundly rejected the offer. I haven't researched this but from just following the ACA debate over the years maybe there is better offer for the Republicans here that they could accept, the original design of the ACA when it was passed in 2009 or 2010 is that Americans whose income was at or below one hundred and thirty-three percent of the poverty line had to go into the Medicaid program which is less expensive for the Federal government with the Biden Administration and the Pandemic era laws Americans with incomes at or under 133 % of the Poverty level could get individual insurance on the exchanges and get a premium tax credit - very expensive for the American government. Part of the impasse solution is have the law go back to the original design all Americans 133% of the poverty level or below you go into Medicaid program the one big exception would be for those states that did not do the Medicaid expansion because in that case all these people will not have an option for health insurance. The other part of the solution is to make all the people getting health insurance through the ACA exchanges pay at least twenty-five dollars per month for premiums this will weed out all the fraud in the system where according to Republicans hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans have health insurance in the ACA individual exchanges they do not even know about because they don't have to pay premiums because their incomes are so low and agents for the health insurance companies signed them up; Democrats twenty-five dollars a month isn't going to kill anyone if you go out and buy a lunch at many retail food establishments in America you are going to be paying fifteen to twenty dollars, five dollars more is not onerous! So this offer get the ACA back to its original design and weed out disgraceful fraud in the system isn't really a negotiation it is just obvious responsible governing and so both parties should find this offer amenable!
