Hitler was clever. He also was extremely lucky at first. He managed to convert the very unlikely into the fact he became ruler of Germany and had conquered nations larger than Germany.

Start here. Any comments?

Hitler came into power roughly at the same time FDR was elected to end the depression that turned into the "Great Depression". According to a book "In the garden of the beasts" by Eric Larson, FDR knew about the atrocities that were happening in Germany under Hitler and he did nothing except pester his Ambassador to try to recover money that was owed to the Allies as a result of Germany's WW1 surrender. The U.S. had no central intelligence agency prior to WW2 so the FDR administration was forced to rely on accounts from the Ambassador to Germany for a consideration of the political climate in Europe after WW1 but for some reason the FDR administration didn't care about graphic accounts of Jews and even Americans brutalized on the streets of Berlin.

American democracy has faced threats long before Trump came along. We've gotten mostly lucky in defeating them in the past, but it appears our luck might be running out. I'm pretty sure you're full of shit about Roosevelt, but you can believe what you want, everyone has an opinion.

Butler, a retired Marine Corps major general, testified under oath that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a fascist veterans' organization with him as its leader and use it in a coup d'état to overthrow Roosevelt. In 1934, Butler testified under oath before the United States House of Representatives Special Committee on Un-American Activities (the "McCormackDickstein Committee") on these revelations.

I have not read Eric Larsen's book but of course FDR was complicit.

I have long owned the book I am currently reading, yet read chunks of it and not all of the great book by William Shirer who is an expert on this topic.
