When we think of education we think of book learning, or, schoolhousin'. In other words, academics. Obtaining or memorizing knowledge or information that may or may not have any lasting value to us. The main purpose of academics is mental development without the need for any measurable improvement in one's life solely through what has been learned or memorized.

So, the value lies in the ability to learn, not so much the subject matter. At the root of learning is reading, and reading comprehension. The root of reading comprehension (assuming one can read) is focus, concentration, and above all repetition.

For most this requires more time than is given by the teacher, and, a quiet environment outside of the classroom with no distractions whatsoever. Usually, these conditions can only be found at home, thus "homework" is fundamental to learning.

Fire away teachers.

You've stumbled upon the great truth of education, but it isn't what you think it is.

A good education teaches you to learn. That's rather more difficult than teaching someone multiplication tables.

Homeschooling is amateurs trying to do it.

There is a reason why teaching is a profession, not a hobby.

I'm a parent and I blame the parents ...

We parents do need help with teaching the three R's ... readin', 'rightin' and 'rithmeticin' ... there's economies of scale in the public education systems we have ...

What's changed is so many families are either single working parent or both parents work ... schools become a baby-sitting service for parents who don't make time to see to the education their own children ...

Is it time to look at child labor laws? ... without middle school we'd have ten-year-olds in the job market, that ain't legal most places ... without high school that'd be 14-year-olds which isn't that bad of an idea ... they'd get injury and killed at a higher rate but that's the choice we'd be making ...

I do believe the government is obligated to educate her people enough to enjoy all their rights ... Free Press means readin' and 'rightin' ... Capitalism means 'rithmeticin' ... none of the rest matters since you'll only be swinging a hammer for a living ... or like me telling others where to swing their hammers ...

You're making my point about reading comprehension. ;)

Oh, I get what you are trying to say, you are just wrong. Or at least ignoring some crucial points.
The focus of my comments is learning, not teaching. BIG difference. A great teacher can teach until he or she is blue in the face, it doesn't mean their students are learning anything. The problem isn't teaching, it's learning.

Why do people just sit around imagining shit about education then spout off as if they have any idea what they're talking about?

Cuz maybe they do.

I want to help my fellow man while I am still able.

If you want to help, speak less and listen more.
Sorry if I gored yer ox a little.

Listen to you I assume? If I want to hear bragging, I'll listen to myself. ;)

To anyone who knows what the hell they are talking about.
Why can't I use my own successful example? Mentoring is the final stage of 'life and learning'.
