MAGA did not originate with Trump. It began with the man so many white Republicans claim to be one of the great American Presidents, a tall tale where the facts show the exact opposite, Ronald Reagan. I remember all of these things this man talks about. They were happening in the community I lived in. The programs, the opportunities, the improvements. But white racists could not have that—so we see a white backlash to the Civil Rights Movement and black progress in the form of Reagan.

Very creative way to say, "I HATE TRUMP" for the 1,098,215th time.

And obviously this is deeply offensive to the left, since they have so many folks in that party that believe in a global communist utopia because they hate America.

You're cutting social programs = you're a racist.

You start out in 1954 by saying, “******, ******, ******.” By 1968 you can’t say “******”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “******, ******.”

Lee Atwater
You simple-minded whites on the right, or who lean right even as they claim neutrality, don't seem able to see the racism in cutting out programs that primarily affect black communities.

Atwater was simply pushing the electoral strategy of LBJ.

I think if anything, the Reagan era was a backlash to the Jimmy Carter era which was running us into the ground. But for those who look for racism in everything... there is no other motive than racism when it comes to white people.
