The AK-47 needs no gas tube to function

LOL.....The AK is so over-gassed that you could probably cut the piston section in half lengthwise and it would still work. ;)

To be honest an AK "gas tube" should be called something else....Maybe "piston guide" as that is all it does besides house the upper handguard.

They are intentionally over-gassed because they are so damn sloppy. They leak around the piston when brand new, much less after a few decades of crappy maintenance in a dessert.

Of course this turns out to be a bug that is a feature. The very sloppiness is what allows them to take so much abuse.

That's why US Made AKs (not made from kits) often get a bad rep because they are not as sloppy.....And don't run near as well.

I had a early PSA AK that was a total dog till I stuck a Romanian bolt/carrier/piston in it. Then it ran fine up to the time I parted with it.

I have literally seen one that was buried in sand wrapped in a few rags for who knows how long fire normally after just blowing the grit off of it. It wasn't terribly accurate, but it cycled reliably.
