China possessed limited offensive capability in 1969. The Chinese army got chewed to pieces in the Korean War, suffering about 1 million casualties. They didn't dare attack during the day, for fear of American air power and artillery. They only drove us back initially because of the element of surprise coupled with barbaric human-wave tactics. Once our lines stabilized, we cut them to pieces repeatedly. They were a backward fighting force, usually having to rely on bugles and whistles, and sometimes even signal flags, to communicate and coordinate troop movements.
