During the Great Hunger, Ottoman Sultan Khaleefah Abdul-Majid I sent money and five ships full of food and medical supplies to the starving people of Ireland. The British tried to block the ships from delivering the aid, but Turkish sailors managed to get in and offload the needed goods anyway.

This little-known act of charity may have (who knows?) kept some of my ancestors alive at a particularly perilous time. So, thanks Ottomans!

Little known tale of generous Turkish aid to the Irish during the Great Hunger

Hehe, very good. So it was not the soviets that invented the destruction of aid packages. Western programming is paramount.

No one would go out of their way to HELP the Irish, but they would to HARM the English. Heh heh.

Indeed. This is more plausible than my earlier theory.

The Ottoman Empire was fighting a 'civil war' against mainly Egypt and others in the 1830's-1850's. Guess who the Brits were financing? ...
