Israeli scientists: ‘SuperAger’ brains make twice as many new neurons as their healthy peers

It appears that folks over 80 who still have good cognitive function fall into a category of supuriority made possible by their particular brain able to make more neurons.

I think we have several super agers on this forum.

Should I start wearing an "S" on my chest? :auiqs.jpg:

lol

So much for "neurons can't regrow". :p

The problem is more, the new neurons have nowhere to go. How can I say this... um... most people think of a neuron like this:

But a real neuron looks like this:

It's dense in there, man. There's nowhere to go. A new cell has to replace an old one. There is programmed cell death called apoptosis, it's an interesting process, the neighbors kill off the cell with electricity (I posted a thread about it a while back).

So it seems to me, what they're really saying, is greater recirculation rate. More neurons means more filling, which means more old ones have to go.

btw the worst part about the dense neuropil is "nerves twitch". They do twitch. :p

For those who don't?

This is their last one!
