The Telegraph published lately "BBCâs bias âpushed Hamas lies around the worldâ. Leaked dossier says corporationâs Arabic service boosted terror groupâs claims and minimised Israeli suffering. BBC Arabic gave large amounts of space to statements from Hamas.

The memo, sent to all BBC Board members and now circulating in UK government departments, warns that BBC Arabicâs output risks undermining the BBCâs global role in countering disinformation â especially concerning given its partial funding by the Foreign Office via the World2020 programme.
Key Claim: âIt is hard to conclude anything other than that BBC Arabicâs story treatment was designed to minimise Israeli suffering and paint Israel as the aggressor.â â Michael Prescott
The BBC initially called them âeyewitnesses,â not journalists. After exposure, it ceased using Alagha and claimed improved vetting processes.
This is a summary . It's not really new about biased BBC but one highlight caught my eye, they knew the fake "mass grave" was a lie.

BBCâs Arabic Service Accused of Systemic Bias in Gaza War Coverage
A leaked 19-page internal memo from Michael Prescott, former independent adviser to the BBCâs Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee (EGSC), has accused BBC Arabic of systemic bias in its coverage of the Israel-Gaza war. The dossier alleges the service minimized Israeli suffering, amplified Hamas propaganda, and operated with an editorial slant âconsiderably differentâ from the main English-language BBC website â despite both being required to uphold the same impartiality standards. The memo, sent to all BBC Board members and now circulating in UK government departments, warns that BBC Arabicâs output risks undermining the BBCâs global role in countering disinformation â especially concerning given its partial funding by the Foreign Office via the World2020 programme.

1. Disproportionate Weight to Hamas Statements
- BBC Arabic gave extensive, uncritical airtime to Hamas-provided death tolls â widely regarded as exaggerated for propaganda â even after the UN revised its estimate of women and children among the dead from 70% to 52% in July 2024.
- An internal review found the service gave âunjustifiable weightâ to these figures despite known credibility concerns.
- In a sampled five-month period (MayâOctober 2024):
- Main BBC site: 19 stories on Israeli hostages, 4 critical of Hamas
- BBC Arabic: 0 stories on hostages, 0 critical of Hamas
2. Minimization of Israeli Suffering
Majdal Shams Rocket Attack (July 2024)
A Hezbollah rocket killed nine Druze children playing football in the Golan Heights. BBC Arabic:- Omitted mention of child victims
- Gave prominence to Hezbollah denials
- Ignored evidence of nearby Hezbollah strikes
- Next day: Ran a report suggesting Israel may have faked the attack
Fawzia Sido Rescue Story
A Yazidi woman kidnapped by ISIS at 11, trafficked to Gaza, and rescued by Israeli forces after her Hamas captor was killed:- BBC Arabic headline: âIsrael says âYazidi prisoner returned to Iraq after 10 years in Gaza,â Hamas tells BBC âIsrael narrative is fabricated.ââ
- Included a 582-word Hamas rebuttal â longer than the original story
Jaffa Attack (October 2024)
Hamas gunmen killed seven Israeli civilians on a train and platform:- English site: Detailed civilian deaths
- Arabic site: Described as a âmilitary operationâ with no mention of civilians
3. Platforming Extremist Contributors
Three freelance journalists with extreme anti-Semitic social media posts appeared hundreds of times on BBC Arabic (Nov 2023 â Apr 2025):| Samer Elzaenen | Called for Jews to be burned âas Hitler didâ; praised 30+ attacks on civilians |
| Ahmed Alagha | Called Israelis âless than human,â Jews âdevilsâ |
| Ahmed Qannan | Called attacker who killed 5 Israelis a âheroâ; endorsed throat-cutting rhetoric |
The BBC initially called them âeyewitnesses,â not journalists. After exposure, it ceased using Alagha and claimed improved vetting processes.
4. Major Factual Errors & Misrepresentations
- Mass Graves at Hospitals: BBC reports implied Israeli forces buried thousands at Nasser and Al-Shifa. Internal review: Graves were dug by Palestinians before IDF arrival; no independent evidence of executions.
- Starving Babies Claim: UN officialâs misquote (14,000 babies at risk in 48 hours) aired uncorrected on Newsnight. Actual: 14,000 children over a year. Images showed a baby already discharged.
- ICJ Genocide Ruling: BBC repeatedly claimed court found âplausible case of genocide.â Former ICJ president Joan Donoghue: âNot correct.â Court made no determination on merits. Took months to clarify.
- Hamas Tunnels: Described as used to âmove goods and peopleâ â omitting weapons smuggling and attacks, risking sanitization of terror infrastructure.
Internal Reviews & Executive Inaction
- July 2024 World Service review: No red flags in BBC Arabic.
- EGSC commissioned independent review by David Grossman (535 English + 523 Arabic articles): Exposed âstark differencesâ in framing and balance.
- Attendees called it the âmost extraordinary paperâ theyâd seen.
- BBC news controller Jonathan Munro dismissed concerns, praised Arabic team as âunrivalled,â boasted it was âalmost as trusted as Al Jazeera.â
- Prescott: âIs Al Jazeera the new gold standard?â
Political & Public Fallout
The leak emerged amid a separate BBC crisis over a Panorama documentary that doctored Donald Trumpâs speech to imply he incited the Capitol riot.- Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and regulator Ofcom face growing calls for a formal bias inquiry.
- Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called for âwholesale reformâ of BBC Arabic.
