This is a classic Canadian tactic, they use the same tactics when dealing with citizens, PR, optics, underhanded deception to get their way and try and influence America AND Canadian citizens as we try and "hold the line" in the face of incoming 35% tariffs. I have to give Canadian authorities credit, they are trying hard to NOT pay a tariff as the rest of the world is. They hold this event and a non-consequential (from the worlds standpoint) former PM conveniently gave this "advice" to "trade with the rest of the world" as if that hasn't always been the case, it is a great deal why Canada is in big trouble to begin with, we have free trade deals with the poorest nations on earth and shipped out 10s of tousands of jobs to China long ago. We have a free trade ageement with Europe and still dont buy as much from us as we from them, insane really as they dwarf our size. NOW we realize how unfair it was whle America has invested.trillions in Canada over the year , employing 100s of thousands here. As it were, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra also spoke and gave the facts,.America has $37T in debt, $2T a year in trade deficit and it isnt sustainable. Canada is acting as if Russia never attacked Canada over the last 60 years becase of Canadas military strength... https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sask...onference-u-s-canadian-policymakers-1.7595317

Speaking before a room full of policymakers from midwestern Canada and the United States, former prime minister Stephen Harper said the ongoing trade war with the U.S. is a "wake-up call" for Canada to diversify its trade and export markets.

"I was — I think it's fair to say — probably the most pro-American prime minister in Canadian history," Harper said of his tenure from 2006 to 2015.

If the current government asked him a year ago for advice on U.S. President Donald Trump being re-elected and wanting to renegotiate trade, he says he would have thought it was a real opportunity for Canada to deepen its economic and security partnership with the United States.
Midwestern Legislative Conference, an annual non-partisan event being held in Saskatoon this year under the shadow of the ongoing U.S.-Canada trade war.

Harper called the trade war unfortunate, but said Canada has become "grossly" overly reliant on the U.S. — "independent of the current disputes" — and there is no reason for that.

"Just because we have that geographical proximity does not justify the degree of dependence that we have on a single market," he said.
