Great fact:
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain reached its peak with large possessions in the Americas, but the Philippines also became part of the Spanish Empire. During the late 17th century, Spain faced competition from other European colonial powers, primarily England. During the 19th century, many of Spain's former colonies gained independence and the empire collapsed. The Spanish-American War in 1898, when Cuba was lost, definitively put an end to Spanish dominance in Latin America.
The Spanish Armed Forces – Fuerzas Armadas de España – consist of the Army (Ejército de Tierra), the Navy (Armada) and the Air Force (Ejército del Aire) as well as the Guardia Civil. Conscription was abolished in 2002 and Spain has had a professional army since then.
The basic organization of the army consists of 90,000 soldiers in four mechanized brigades, three light infantry brigades and a paratrooper brigade. In addition, there are the Spanish Foreign Legion and the Regulares in Ceuta and Melilla. The army aviation consists of 1 attack helicopter battalion and 3 other helicopter battalions.
The basic organization of the navy consists of 22,000 sailors and 5,000 marines. The fleet has 1 amphibious ship, 10 frigates and four submarines. The marine infantry is organized into one amphibious brigade and three base fighter regiments. The naval aviation has helicopters and Hawker Siddeley Harrier fighter aircraft.
The basic organization of the Air Force consists of 25,000 airmen. The Eurofighter Typhoon, F/A-18 Hornet and Dassault Mirage F1 are the main fighter aircraft.
