First real snowfall of the season. Some schools were closed today. Some have early dismissal. People tend to overreact to the first flakes. Last night there were hordes of people buying gallons of water, milk, and all the bread they could get their hands on. The kids are excited.

I already have a foot of snow on the ground.

Sorry folk: Celsius here. Late 70s to late-80s F. Fantastic rain for the garden of late.

In my school district in Western Pennsylvania, they used to allow a couple of "snow days" in the school calendar, but no more. When it snows they work from home. I'm not sure how it actually works, but they still hold classes and claim they get everything done without the kids having to come to the school.

Yeah, we tried that idiocy when I was still teaching here in KY. It was an epic failure, and the teachers hated it as much as the kids because it accomplished nothing. It was just as bad as a snow day because the lessons were not current and meaningless. The only advantage was we did not have to make them up.

In 1978, a major blizzard caused us to have so many snow days, I graduated from high school in June.

We were out of school for nearly two weeks in '78.

Early dismissal, but the drive home was a nightmare.

I think we were too and we were actually out of school for snow when the big blizzard hit and I think we ere out that week and the next. We had nearly 3 feet of snow and people were running out of food, so I delivered food for the Red Cross with the CAP.

A tragic number of people died in their cars trying to get home when it hit. I remember my older brothers thought it was great fun to toss me off our second-story porch because there was so much snow they knew I wouldn't get broken.

I remember driving home from work in a dreaded snowfall. Crawling traffic. Took 3 hours to get home for a handful of miles.

Guy I worked with had to use the toilet while driving. No place around. He had a coke bottle in the car and took a leak in it while sitting behind the wheel in traffic.

That's why you always keep an empty coffee cup in the cup holder.
