Yes, it's very much a favorite in America!

There's a very famous WW1 story of how a German soldier caused a brief truce when he stood up and sang the song during battle.


It was also an "accidental" Christmas song, the lore says it was written because of a last minute switch at the church. Some songs have a certain "magic" about them....this is one. So simple. Just three chords. But there's something about it....

We always end the Christmas Eve service with Silent Night. One year our pastor said, hey what we doing? Kind of a sad song. So we ended with "Go Tell It On the Mountain".....and I thought people would RIOT. HA Pastor said he had so many complaints he never switched it again
