The left, throughout history and throughout the modern world, want to intrude on private transactions between supposedly free people by determining how they must do business. The result is an atmosphere wherein it's illegal to work and be productive. The consequence is a lack of production and prosperity and, ultimately, poverty.

Actually, the European Left, where the term originated from wanted to put the "people" in charge of their own fate and take central planners out of the equation.
It's morphed into a sinister, vile and evil being- that would be the "modern" version, not the historic version- think Marx for the historic version-
