I'm glad I did not know this show is directed by Ben Stiller. I can't stand Ben Stiller.
But Ben Stiller did not write the show, and the writing is amazing. One of the writers also wrote for Mad Men if that helps tell you how good this show is. This is nothing like Mad Men, though.
The funny thing is, Severance was nominated for an astounding 74 Emmy's, yet it only won for Main Title Design and the musical score.
I did not even know there was such a thing as a Main Title Design Emmy. An Emmy for the opening credits!?!
Severance is about employees who work underground (innies) whose memories are wiped every day when they go home at night. At home they (outies) have no memory of their workday. At work, they have no memory of their outside lives, and so from their perspective, they are always at work. They clock out at promptly at five, and the next moment they are clocking in.
The dialog is both weird and funny.
One employee is obsessed with the various levels of perks they receive for their performance. And these prizes are as inane as it gets. Erasers, finger traps, caricature portraits, etc.
I'm only four episodes in, but I am hooked.
The show revolves around Mark, played by Adam Scott, who you may recognize from Parks and Rec.
John Turturro and Patricia Arquette play two of the main characters.
Christopher Walken also makes some cameos.
The new employee is played by a very talented Britt Lower. I am not normally into redheads, but this woman is absolutely beautiful.
A stellar cast.
It's difficult to describe just how bizarre and enjoyable this show is.
