mr. boe has been using Norton Utilities for years, but it has gotten to the point where it causes more issues than it solves. Do you have recommendations for a security? He's looking at AVG and Avast. Any other recommendations?

Windows Defender with MS Security Essentials is decent protection for Windows 7 - If on Mac or Linux I would go with AVG.

Avast free is probably MORE annoying than most viruses. You WILL be inundated by constant popups.

Defender works well for Windows 8, with security essentials it is decent for 7. That said, I use ESET. However, I find Defender more effective than Avast or AVG. ESET is not free, so of the free offerings on Windows, I would go with Defender.

He can try Winpatrol, then. It is not a booster tool like Norton utilities but focuses on security.

The vast majority of malware attacks today are browser hacks, hijacks, and exploits. Mac is extremely vulnerable as the Mac community is largely ignorant of security. The worst issue facing users today is that malware written in HTML5 or Java will attack a PC or Mac (or Linux) equally - it doesn't need the OS. The fact that Mac was irrelevant and ignored by virus writers in the past is no longer protection. Many exploits go after credit card and banking information, they are stealth by nature, usually the victim never knows of the attack. Because Mac users usually have no grasp of security, they are at far higher risk than PC users, who nearly always have some sort of protection.

If I thought it was great, I would have said it is great - which I didn't.

My real world experience is that some very nasty malware has danced right past Avast and AVG, while stopped by Security Essentials. IF you run Defender alone on a Windows 7 machine, you have no AV at all.

I don't have stock in Microsoft, but I have been in IT for 35 years, in the trenches with thousands of machines. It isn't a game for me, it isn't a hobby. I use what is most effective. Which in my case is ESET with a dedicated server pushing definition files and isolating IP's of any suspicious packets. However, the question was about home use. In my experience, which is considerable, Essentials provides reasonable protection for those who do not frequent porn and Wares sites.

I would add a few, angry IP for a sniffer, Beyond Compare for file replication. CPU-Z to snoop bios. Etc.

CCleaner is for removing unwanted files - it is no sort of protection at all - it is not an AV. A good AV is still required.

Okay. It's just I've had friends who were Microsoft trained IT techs, the anti-opensource/freeware brainwashing was beyond belief. I don't have 35 years in IT but my couple of decades experience is everyone running Defender/Security Essentials has been infected at least once. I have them put Avast or AVG on their system and only one in twenty ended up being reinfected (probably surfing porn or using torrents).
