It's a neurological problem called spasmodic dysphonia. It's something he is completely incapable of controlling.

And a lot of times it has the same effect me in a small degree, it doesn't bother me but I am aware of it.

There is something about it I can't explain that triggers a distress part of your brain on a deeply buried part of the mind. Similar to have a childs cries trigger a part of your brain that demands you pay attention by giving you a sense of urgency a lot of people take as being annoyance. Some sounds trigger a part of your brain that tells you there is something to be concerned about, it irritates, makes you distressed because it's some primal instinct. His voice disorder just happens to be close to that kind of sound, that's why a lot of people have a hard time listening to him.

Thank you. I used to also have the same reaction to hearing CBS news journalist Jeff Pegues in recent years. I think in Jeff's case there were several things going on including the dread that he would be announcing that he's been diagnosis with throat cancer (he has not been). And I would tense up and remain that way as he struggled to get his words out.

In this video, he sounds so much better but at his worse the discomfort I would feel was almost painful. I tried to find some video of what he sounded like during the worse of it but can't find anything easily at the moment. If I do find it, I'll post it:

Your explanation is perfect thank you. CBS correspondence Jeff Pegues has suffered from the same disorder and he has only recently spoken openly about it. He says it's due in his case to severe anxiety.

And I believe I intentionally made the distinction between the sound making me feel anxious instead of it making be feel annoyed because my reaction, in the case of Jeff Pegues ,is "something is wrong" and I believe I began dreading having to hear the bad news of his [progressing] illness. Fortunately it didn't come and Jeff's health did improve as did his voice.

And I also believe that you're absolutely correct in that his voice instills in me as well as some other, what my brain interprets as a "sound of distress". A fellow human needs something, even if it's just my attention to try to determine what kind of assistance I can or should be summoning.

Months ago I did a search about RFK's voice and found what you did but also the article I read [somewhere] mentioned his condition, spasmodic dysphonia causes the sufferer pain when speaking, which increases the longer the person speaks. I think that is why I feel anxiety when listening to him. I feel he is in pain and no help is available. It's sad for me. He's an interesting man. I don't have to share another's politics to feel empathy.
