What kind of parenting is this? Giving a 30-something son at home who has a drug problem all kinds of money to spend on dope?

What did Meathead think was going to happen? Nick's drug habit is not going to be a plus for him in the joint. Drugs are extra expensive and addicts can get into a lot of trouble.

He also paid to send him to rehab dozens of times.
Abandoning him and throwing him into the streets would not make him better.
Word is that Nick had been drug free for several years but was suffering from mental health issues like schizophrenia

Reiner made mistakes, and probably the biggest one was disregarding the advice of health professionals in favor of doing what he thought was right.

I'm not sure if the movie he made about the kid reveals this, but he said publicly he knew his son better than the health professionals treating him. While true, he didn't know more than they did on how to deal with him.

Sometimes with severe addiction there is no right answer
Whatever path you choose, you lose

The same type of parenting that gave Trump a million older trust fund as a child.
