The Republicans have no issues to run on, so they have to make the election about Obama. He's a muslim! He's friend of terrorists! Today the talking point is, He's a socialist! The problem is Obama is none of these things. Obama is a Christian. He is not a friend of terrorists and he is not a socialist. In addition Obama has more governmental experience(10 years) than all but 20 of our presidents, and he is intelligent, charismatic, and well spoken. So what do the Republicans do? They use lies, falsehoods, and inuendo in the hope that the electorate is just dumb enough to believe them.

The Republican strategy is the same one that Bush used to win South Carolina in 2000 by claiming that McCain had fathered a black baby. The reason McCain's strategy is the same is that he has Karl Rove clones running his campaign.

Since we do not, in this nation, put limits on what issues a person is allowed to vote on - I don't see why people are so outraged that some other voter might find Obama's choice of associations to be a consideration. People are voting for Obama because he's black, because McCain's old, because Palin is a woman, because they only care about abortion, because they like how cool he is...we can not stop people for voting for reasons we disagree with...so why spend so much time worrying about people who are concerned about Obama's friends and/or associates? Its as legitimate as voting for Obama because he seems "the most like me." and we all know people do that all the time - it is hardly an "Evil Republican" trait alone.
As far as the socialist claim goes - Obama brought that on himself. "Spreading the wealth around is a good thing." Raised a lot of eyebrows well before McCain brought it up at the debate. Many in this nation get nervous at the notion of government taking away from them and giving to those who did not earn the handouts they were given. Obama could put these concerns to rest by simply explaining what he meant...instead, he and his friends in the media have taken to attacking an ordinary individual for having the audacity to ask the candidate a question. This concerns people even more - ask Obama a question - risk having your entire life dug through by the media..."Joe the Plumber" asked a question...and not even a particularly difficult one...and Obama gaffed it. Rather than laughing and saying, "I understand how my answer may have concerned some people...let me clarify..." he instead mocked and ridiculed an average american..and allowed the media to camp out on the guy's lawn and attempt to destroy him...all for asking a rather basic question. This concerns people. It may not concern you...but for some - it smacks of a candidate trying a bit too hard to cover up a gaffe...
The bottom line is...we are all allowed to vote for whoever we choose, based on whatever criteron we find important. When I was in college, I voted in an election based solely on who the pro-choice candidate was. Nothing else mattered to me except making sure that the candidate was pro-choice. Looking back, I'm embarrassed at my lack of interest/caring on issues that I feel truly matter - but I was just as entitled to vote at 19 as I am now at 29.
We can engage each other about those issues...challenge each other to explain why we find those issues important. You can ask people why they feel Obama's associations matter when you don't. Or, with 2 weeks left to go, maybe we're just getting too tired...we can do what Chris has chosen to do...and just add useless blather to the board.
