He wants it restored to the Soviet Union, which it was once part of. It was one of the founding republics of the USSR in 1922, known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR), and it remained a part of the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. Ukraine was the second-most populous and economically powerful Soviet republic after Russia.

What does he plan to do with it, if anything?

My opinion is that I don't have a clue.

welcome to the forum newbie. Your OP needs a link or it will be closed by the mods.

Putin looks at Ukraine as NATO coming way too close to Moscow.
Ukraine had been in Russia's "sphere of influence" and part of the old USSR.
Putin is 72, he gave capturing Ukraine his best shot, but he is smart enough to "cut his losses' and sees that another year or two of war is not moving the needle.
If he had captured Ukraine it would boost Russia's sagging GDP and grain production.
Best hope is for a ceasefire and Ukraine keeps its independence.

Putin wants the land and its resources. The people and cities not so much. He would prefer that all the people emigrate to Europe. He will then populate and rebuild Ukraine with Russians.

Oh goody, another NAFO sock.
Not a single claim made here is accurate.
Three years of the Russian president restating his reasons and goals without changing them and this yutz pretends to know different.
