I believe that at that young of an age bracket, some children benefit from normative social influences.

Many, if not most, home schoolers are connected with co-ops in which their kids receive that. I just don't think that peer pressure in school is for the most part to be smart. In fact, many smart kids are stigmatized for it.

When there is only one parent, or both parents work full time jobs, the child gets less parental support.

In my experience, the academic negative side of peer pressure comes along at later ages than 5-8 year olds at the classroom level. That said, I do know a parent who tried to make sure her child was as dumb as dirt because her school system only paid for pre-school if the child was a minority or found deficient on their evaluation. Otherwise, parents had to put them in paid pre-school if they wanted a babysitter.

Look Before You Leap to Conclusions

Your aggressively Gotcha comment is typical of the slippery logic taught in the serf schools, especially in college. Pressuring lazy kids to start studying is not related to having them go above average; it is getting them to reach their potential, which may be only good enough to pass.
