If you have Paramount Plus, there is a documentary called Predators. Its about the Chris Hansen and his program âTo Catch A Predatorâ which used to come on Dateline NBC. I didnât know what another guy (a Nick Shirley type) tried to revive the series. His name is Skeet Hansen.
Anyway, the first part of the doc highlights the NBC phenomenon. I only watched some of the episodes that aired at the time. The documentary does air some of the questions I never asked. It pointed out that the dudes who were lured to the home by the âdecoyâ may have thought Hansen was a police officer and that they were confessing before being Mirandized. So that part of the case could be inadmissible. The doc points out that the conviciton rate for those on the show was really low when you consider they have this guy on tape showing up with a six pack of Smirnoff to see a 13 y/o.
The second part tackles Skeet and it is freaking hilarious. The âdecoyâ he has set up is this clearly of age woman. The one âtakedownâ they show is when they are at a seedy Red Roof Inn in Grand Rapids. Skeet is in the bathroom with his cameraman (and the cameraman of the documentary. They confront the would-be John. Here is where it gets hilarious (sort of). The guy is being recorded by Skeetâs cameraman while Skeet tries to interview him using the Chris Hanse M.O. of âwhat did you think was going to happenâ and âwhy did you bring alcoholâ and âour friends from the Grand Rapids police department will be here shortly". The would-be John starts crying and sits down in this chair. He covers his face and is just sobbing. Skeet isnât getting anything out of the guy and tells his assistant to call the po-po. His assistant tells him, âThey told me they wonât be here soon.â So now Skeet is like, âaw shit...what do we do?â The would-be John is like suicidal was they try to get him to sign a waiver so he can appear. Now he realizes he has some power and doesnât sign.
