"Portland jury clears black man of assault because white man he stabbed had said the n-word

A black man was acquitted of stabbing a white man in Oregon after he claimed the attack was self-defense because the victim called him a racial slur.

Gary Edwards, 43, was charged with second-degree assault for stabbing a man in Portland near a light rail stop on July 8, KPTV reported.

However, he was found not guilty of the crime on October 31 after the jury learned the victim was using racial slurs in the aftermath of the altercation.

Edwards, who is homeless and has a previous assault conviction, admitted to knifing the victim, Gregory Howard Jr., but claimed it was in self-defense because the other man called him the n-word, according to Oregon Live.

He was convicted of attempted second-degree assault in 2021 and was sentenced to three years in prison for another stabbing in 2020, records show.

Edwards was accused of fourth-degree assault for fighting with a shop clerk, but the case was dismissed because he could not secure a public defender."

I can see punching someone in the chops for using the N-word. But, letting a maniac go because the victim said a racial slur after being stabbed and attacked is insane.

Maybe. But the one was just exercising his right to free speech, the other was brutally assaulting him because he didn't like it.

Free Speech just means the government can't arrest you for saying stupid shit.

It doesn't protect you from a well-deserved smash mouth.

So two thugs get into a fight, I just can't get worked up over it.

You talk a lot of shit as well. Does that mean that I have a "right" to stab you without consequence if I am "offended"?

According to the article the n-word was used after the stabbing.

I can see how a long suppressed "n-word" might pass his lips after being stabbed by a black.

Don't act like one and you won't get called one.....Pretty simple stuff.

Well, here's the thing, I've never called you anything as bad as the N-word.

I certainly wouldn't do it if I saw you were a mentally unstable street person, which you might very well be.

Joe, if you randomly stabbed someone, would it matter what the victim said after the fact?

Did he say it after the fact or before?

It is unclear if there is any evidence to suggest that Howard used the slur before he was stabbed.

The problem with this story is that it gives no details about how the case was argued in court or why the jury voted to acquit.

This gives a bit more detail, such as both men were homeless. Both had extensive criminal records.

Is that an AI video? Really?

This one is way better.

I'm not fond of AI Videos, but this one made a point.

This wasn't some nice innocent white guy just minding his own business.

This was two homeless stew-bums getting into a fight over cigarettes.
So, answer the earlier question Joe...What you're saying is that if someone says something to you that you don't like, calls you a name, whatever, you can stab them? IOW, assault with intent?

Well counselor, please describe in legal detail the legal right to give a citizen a "smash mouth", or knife stabbing for "saying stupid shit."
The court and jury would like to know.
