Francis wants the RCC to start celebrating Easter the same day as the Greeks.

I guess that's fine enough, but what about all of the other denominations out there? Are the Baptists , Methodists, Radical Episcopalianites, Mormons and Snake Handlers on board?

Maybe its time for Nicaea Council Part 2, invite all of the various groups to Turkey to pound out an agreement instead of Francis just trying to ignore so many of the interested parties.

Here's a better question- why are all the Protestants, etc. celebrating Easter on the same day the RCC does? (I'm not being snarky, I'm just wondering who sets these dates for the 90% of Christians who aren't some version of Orthodox).

Francis probably won't make it to Easter, so I'm not that worried about it.

The issue arose from the Celtic Catholics and the Roman Catholics calcualing when Easter should be observed.

The Synod of Whitby in 664 AD established the formula used today to calculate the date of Easter. This synod was held at Whitby Abbey in England.

Explanation
  • In 664, Christian missionaries gathered at Whitby Abbey to settle disagreements about Easter.

  • The missionaries came from different regions, including missionaries from Rome and missionaries who observed Irish traditions.

  • The missionaries found that British Christians used a different system for calculating Easter than the Mediterranean basin.

  • The Synod of Whitby decided to use the Alexandrian computus instead of the Britanno-Irish cycle.

  • The Alexandrian computus was eventually adopted by the Irish colonies in northern Britain in the early 8th century.
The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD also established that Easter should be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

The pope will have to do away with 1500 years of Catholic dogma.

Maybe. The problem I think is that the West and East can't agree on when the first Sunday after the first full moon is. This is why Copernicus was so important; they kind of lost track of planetary cycles because they still thought the Earth was the center of the universe.

Actually what Pope Francis (and Catholics) have been working towards is for Catholics and Orthodox to celebrate Easter on the same day. As Easter--for both Churches--falls on the same date in 2025 (April 20), this seems to be a good place/time to start. The difference lies in the Orthodox using the Greek calendar for holy days while the Western world has used the Julian calendar (which began being used in 35 BC).

There has never been a fight over using two dates for Easter. However, there has been renewed interest between Catholics and Orthodox to unite more closely. As far as Protestant Christians following along with this unification as far as Easter goes, that would be up to each denomination. It has never been "wrong" for some to celebrate on one day because they choose to use the other of two calendars.

Whether the two churches will celebrate Easter on the same day in 2026 is yet to be determined, but probably unlikely as this seems to need further deliberation and discussion and will take more time.

Actually, the Julian Calendar began in 46 BCE. 46 BCE was the longest year in history because Julius Caesar had to add 45 days to it to get the dates straightened out.

It was the Gregorian Calendar that created a lot of the confusion on dates.

Now, it would be nice if we actually celebrated Easter on the day Jesus rose from the dead, but he probably never did. Just like it would be nice if we celebrated Christmas on the day he was born... but that probably wasn't a real thing, either.

So instead, the churches just co-opted Pagan holidays of the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox for their imaginary God-man.

Perhaps pend discussion until after Disclosure.
Suddenly you might find Abrahamic Religion Cultists will all but disappear very very fast, or end it all .

It will be interesting to see what is released this year and how it affects the popular prediction that the present Popeye will be the last one .

So keep getting better Francis and we will email you when we are ready for your dying Swan routine .
