I hate de blasio but this is good to hear about. Every DAY in america 100 people are killed in traffic crashes. These are not accidents - it's all due to bad driving. . Stop coddling these killers.

New and sweeping traffic laws are a start, advocates say

June 24,2013
A slate of new traffic laws signed into law by the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio yesterday represents the most sweeping change in memory to the streets of the city, pedestrian advocates say.

“It was a momentous day. The word 'historic' applies,” said Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, which has long been advocating for all of the new measures, which include a reduced speed limit city wide, more serious penalties for failing to yield to a pedestrian, and a stricter policy toward taxi drivers who kill or injure pedestrians. “It’s a raft of legislation, the sum total of which is a change in the culture in New York.

The legislation is in keeping with the mayor’s support of Vision Zero – a Swedish combination of law and street design aimed at sharply reducing traffic deaths. Those who had been championing that cause well before this mayor was elected said they were still somewhat stunned that their message had been so clearly heard.

Lots of things we could do but lets begin by making drunk driving and text driving felonies with a mandatory 5 year loss of license.

New York does have it's fair share of bad drivers, taxi drivers in particular. They are somewhat aggressive to say the least. Hopefully they enforce the new laws.

Being that it's de Blasio though, gotta wonder if the real reason he's doing this is simply to drive more people out of their automobiles and on to bicycles and mass transit. One of the dreams of liberals.

in theory i'm with you. but do you really think a year in jail is a proper punishment for someone stopped texting or drinking (who hasn't hurt anyone) as a first offense?

shouldn't there be discretion to impose lesser sentences for a first offense?

FWIW I don't drink.
I know HOW, but I just don't care for it.

Never had a DWI or a DUI so I don't really have a dog in this hunt but I will say that in this case a "one size fits all" law isn't good for the citizens.

What is illegal now? .08? I don't really know.

A 5 ft tall 100 pound woman might be less stable at .08 than a 6 foot 200 pound male..( or the other way around if you like).

It seems like the only people who really benefit are cops, lawyers, judges, bailiffs, jailers...etc...
It isn't about "justice" it's about getting people into the system and extorting money from them.

you're incapable of rational conversation, aren't you?

Actually that's very rational. I know from personal experience that liberals in general want fewer cars on the road, and more bicycles and mass transit.
Add to that we're talking about Bill de Blasio, one of the more extreme liberal politicians, and it's easy to suspect that there's more to this than simply reducing vehicle collisions and making it safer for pedestrians.

You don't know the half of it.

Naw.

Folks are getting sick of being mowed down by speeding drivers.

He can pass all the laws he wants, but who's going to enforce them? They've already got speed limits in the city that no one's very inclined to enforce. A cab ride in Manhattan is akin to hopping on a roller coaster and it's been that way for as long as I've been going there.

But, hey, it makes the lefties feel good. They tried and that's a win in their book.

Well - is that bad.? What's wrong with bikes and buses.?

HUH.??? Nobody said a year in jail. I said loss of license. Drunk drivers and text drivers deserve prison time but we just don't have the room. But we can take away their license to drive for years.

Hey einstein. Lots of laws involve a judgement call. Why is the speed limit 65 instead of 60.? Why does a pound of pot make you a dealer while 15 oz doesn't.? You have to draw the line somewhere.

That's because the penalties are so light. If a cabby doing 15 mph over the limit was hit with $3000 fine and lost his license for 6 months, you'd get compliance. Our traffic laws are essentially an honor system and that never works. THINK

Yes - my reply is a good one. You can't attack a law just because it draws a seemingly arbitrary line. In many cases there is no other way. THINK
