SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he was blocking Louisiana’s attempt to extradite a doctor in the Golden State accused of mailing abortion pills.

The Democratic governor’s announcement comes a day after Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, said he sent the extradition paperwork in an effort to bring the physician “to justice.” Louisiana has some of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country, while California law aims to protect abortion providers from criminal prosecution for treating out-of-state patients.

Newsom said extraditing the doctor would have violated an executive order he signed in 2022 barring state agencies in his administration from assisting other states’ efforts to prosecute abortion providers.

Governor Newsom is well within his rights as Governor of California to deny the extradition of this doctor. California has Shield Laws that protect providers of abortion services. Let them howl about it Louisiana.

One good thing that miserable, ignorant ****** has done in all his years as gov.
As far as the constitution is concerned, it seems he can do this because the doctor was never actually in the state when he broke their laws. I may be wrong about that, though.

Ailing pills don't sound very healthy.

Louisiana is way over reaching on this. That state has no standing to try this kind of crap and they know it. Political Grandstanding at its worst.
