I think my future wiki article on WWIII has finally reached its final stages if anyone wants to review it:

Most people can barely keep track of current events. I think you've put everything in a blender and poured it out on a table, like trying to read tea leaves.

WW3 is between people who believe in self determination and those who believe in totalitarian big brother rule. It is both internal and external. It is a worldwide struggle. Without principles, sometimes it is difficult to make a distinction between the sides.

Good. That's sort of what I was going for. :P
EDIT: It's basically a free-for-all, but with three major factions instead of just two. You've got the UN-NATO globalists on one side, the radical Zionists on another, and the third faction is an unofficial co-belligerency consisting of Russia, North Korea, Iran and a smattering of Islamist organizations.

There is not going to be a third world war. All of the potential belligerents realize that the next one would be fought in their living rooms. However there will continue to be bellicose posturing over disputed territories and spheres of influence, reminding one of the "Cuban Missile Crisis" in 1962. During that theatrical event, Khrushchev agreed to remove Soviet missiles if JFK agreed to not invade Cuba.

I wonder if the same outcome might apply to Taiwan: Might the US withdraw its military presence if China agreed to not invade Taiwan?

Doubtful.

Does the US believe in "self determination"? Nope. It believes in "do what we tell you to do".

Plenty of dictatorships were on the US's side in the Cold War.
