I had no idea what this 8-part mini-series was about going in. While watching it, I was searching IMDB for the actors and it turns out the director uses most of the actors in the show in several other movies and shows.

The show takes place in a mostly-Catholic small fishing village on a barrier island of the coast of an unnamed mainland. The town is not so much crumbling as cracking and peeling.

The people, too, are cracking and peeling. An oil spill a few years prior had killed the fish off and so the town is dying. People are leaving.

A man who went to prison for killing a woman while drunk driving returns to the island. He had sworn never to return when he left after high school and was making a very good living until his tragic accident. He moves back in with his parents, having nowhere else to go.

A prior girlfriend is also there, pregnant, who had also sworn never to return when she left the island after high school, but is now going through a divorce with nowhere else to go.

And finally, a surprise priest shows up to serve as the shepherd for the Catholic Church since the Monsignor who had been their pastor had fallen ill.

I'll leave it there, except to say the paranormal elements begin creeping in little by little and eventually climax in some seriously fucked up shit. My wife and I did not expect this.

In fact, my wife was joking in the first couple episodes that this was feeling like a Hallmark movie.

In most places, the writing is specatular. In other places, it is really horrible. I think this is explained by the fact there are no less than eight writers on this show. Too many cooks. But the good writing far outweighs the bad.

A pretty good show with some surprising plot twists.

There is one giant plot hole, though it does not take away from the show. No one even notices when the first person goes missing. My wife and I were laughing about this. "Anybody seen Bob?" "Where's Bob?" That's not his name, but it is a really weird oversight.

We watched this when it came out - pretty dang good show.
May watch it again a few years down the road.

midnight is usually on Christmas
That's what came to mind when I saw the title, but the title made more sense once I watched the show.
