PC "upgraded" last night - which is already aggravating because you can no longer turn off Windows upgrades.
You can disable upgrades, but Windows home addition will simply turn it back on.

So I get the "Let's set up your PC" - well gee I have had this laptop for over a year. **** you - skip-skip-skip
I said - NO - to everything, which is aggravating because it will aske you up to 3 times to say no to trick you into clicking OK.
All done - "WTF??" - first thing I see is my desktop items now have a green check mark. That tells me One Drive is turned back on. **** you. I have turned this thing off so many damn times. So I have to go into settings into an area that is 6 clicks deep to disable permanently. Most people will not know how to do this - and that is what they want. They want your data, and they want it bad.

Then I go to my gmail, and get a prompt "gmail wants to connect to other devices on your network" - what? **** you. Where did that come from.

Oh! - It wasn't done.
Then I notice it changed the association of office files to use Microsoft Office, which I don't have. So I had to change that to go back to Libre. - again most people don't know how to do that.
Great - it also changed association with PDFs to open with Edge. **** you. So I had to change that back to Acrobat.

This should not be legal.

It's not just Microsoft; it's just about everything, everywhere nowadays.

"We can make it easier for you to connect with us if you give us all your information and connect all your devices to our services. I mean how can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?"

Don't let it get you down though because it was always going to happen, and the only problem is that you were silly enough to think that it either shouldn't or wouldn't.

It's the cost of doing business in a modern world, where businesses are no longer worried about whether or not they piss you off. It works, because as you mentioned, most people don't know how to stop it, fix it or shut it off, and they are more influenced by their desire for immediate gratification than figuring anything out, or refusing to do business with the offenders.

But hey, if you really want to beat your head against the wall, at least video it and there is a possibility you could become an overnight YouTube sensation, and a multibillion-dollar influencer. Just ask someone under 25 years old, and they'll tell how easy that is, as soon as they round up $58 of couch change to handle their Grubhub bill.

I feel you brother, and it's really not funny but you have to laugh. Reasonable apathy is a blessing when you finally figure out, "ain't nobody going to be fixing any of this shit."

Now you know why old people sit on the porch watching the world go by, and leave it with, "Uh-Huh!" They knew it was going to happen.

I got a new laptop a few mo. ago and I dealt with the same thing. I bought the Office 2010 suite years ago and I liked the fact that it was local to my machine--no cloud. No more. I went through and disabled everything I could find Microsoft on my computer, but then I couldn't open my Access, Excel or Word files. Long story short, I went to Firefox/Duck Duck Go for browsing and I found a FREE software called WPS Office that will open and allow editing and creation of those MS Office files and it resides on my machine. If you're interested, here is the link. Free Download WPS Office for PC/ Windows/ Mac | Download Latest Version

In Windows 11, you should be able to turn off updates. I have temporary done so. It stays off However Microsoft will keep reminding you turn to it on. I believe MS will continue to install security updates if you shut off updates.

Believing you can turn off Windows updates and maintain a working stable system is a fools errand.
