Oh my God this movie sucks! I do not understand how it received a 77% critic rating and a 73% audience rating.

Maybe it's because the main character, Mickey 17, is the same actor who was the leading male love interest in the Twilight series. There were a lot of creepy middle-aged women who crushed on him in the Twilight days. And of course there were hordes of teenage girls, including my own, who had a crush on him.

That may be the basis behind the 73% audience rating, I don't know.

Trust me, this movie sucks.

I've never seen the Twilight movies, but I seriously doubt he had the grating whiny voice he has in this movie.

I think the creators intended this move to be a comedy, but the writing and the actors utterly fail in the attempt.

The basic premise is the Earth is overpopulated and an expedition is sent into the Universe to find a new planet to populate. Of course, bad sci-fi movie tropes require that planet to have a hostile environment.

I won't bother going into the life and times of Mickey 17. You'll probably be able to figure out his role in life from the trailer below.

We thought about it, but luckily I looked to see what the Critical Drinker said about it.
He hated it, and said similar to what you did - calling it a 'Pandering clown show where the trailer is better than the entire movie".

I asked my youngest daughter last night to listen to Mickey 17's voice.

She could not believe how different the actor's voice was from the Twilight days.

Struggling to find anything to watch, and since it is "free" on HBO - we watched it despite trusted critics hating it etc. We can always turn it off.

My take - The praised Bong Joon Ho ruined the story. I read the book, it was better because it wasn't so whacky. He changed the character of the Marshall - leader of the expedition to be this completely bizarre character who needed his wife to tell him how to tie his shoes. He was made to be stupid and can't do anything without his wife. Why??? In the book he didn't have a wife!
Boon sort of followed the book, and made numerous changes that are simply not good. Changing the relationship between Mickey 17 and 18 - making 18 a psychopath who wanted to murder Mickey 17 all the time. Not in the book. They were friends in the book! Why change that??
The creatures - WTF??? In the book they are murderous and hard to kill. In the movie they are made to be like cute little guys. Why?????????
We watched the whole movie - I will give it that. But it is sad that this lauded director ruined the story for purposes that make no sense.
