He is a actual Doctor. He has not practiced since 2006 upon gaining TV status where he makes 100 times more than he did while practicing.

Dr. Phil is a psychologist, NOT a psychiatrist. If he diagnosis you with anxiety, depression, bi-polar, etc. he will then refer you to a psychiatrist who will then give you a fifteen minute analysis of the symptoms, and do the proscribing of the medications based on other health and biological statistics.


A psychiatrist CAN use Dr., for the simple reason, because they have been to medical school, and they have a medical licensee to practice medicine.

You have to have a license by the government system to issue controlled substances, neither "Dr. Phil," nor "Dr. Jill," can either write a script for a controlled substance. Neither passed the boards. A psychiatrist is required to.
