It all started with Bush Derangement Syndrome. Ever since, supporters of each new president have recycled the same playbook: anyone who criticizes their guy too much must be suffering from a clinical condition. Trump supporters, never ones to miss a chance to borrow someone else’s idea, were the latest to xerox the template and call it original.
But here’s the thing … presidents run the country. Obsessing over them is at least geographically appropriate.
So what do we call it when these same copycats become more fixated on the mayor of a single city than on any of the actual 2028 presidential contenders? Kamala Harris? A few mentions. Gavin Newsom? Crickets. But Zohran Mamdani … mayor of New York … apparently lives rent-free in their heads 24/7.
At least the original “derangement syndrome” crowd was targeting leaders of the free world. These imitators can’t even aim that high … obsessing over someone who runs one city in a country of 330 million people.
We may need a new entry in the DSM.
