Maybe a 1/3 to their glory days of 1970s and 1960s

They hardly ever murder anymore and their crimes are more white collar fraud with gambling and prostitution

Still the 5 families exist in NYC and also mob families in Philly and Boston still active

. Still crews in NJ too

The great Chicago mob is also barely active and on their last legs

Oddly , I have been into mafia for 30 years!!

Genovese the most powerful and important

What family
Was he an associate???

I never asked. They mainly put cigarette machines, gambling machines, bowling machines, video games and stuff like that in bars and nightclubs. At least that is the end of it I saw because he went around collecting money from them and fixed the stuff. They may have been into more.

Sometimes if he were in my area, he would pick me up and we would go on service runs together.

If we went to a bar and they served food, we would get free food.

One night, we were in kind of a rough town and some guy came out of a side street against the light and hit us (not badly). We were in the company car that carried service parts and stuff. A cop came along and my buddy explained what happened and that he was just on a service call working for Mr. XYZ and as soon as he mentioned that name, the cop straightened up and said: "Yes Sir. Do not worry, I will take care of everything here, you can just go on your way."

And we just drove away, no questions.

Maybe they are just more discrete and/or operating legitimate businesses, or hybrid businesses that make it difficult to track.

I worked in an arcade when I was a teen. This was back in the day when an arcade was pinball machines and pool tables.

I never saw the owner except once a week when he would come in with a mobster and they would open up the coin boxes and split them 50/50.

You could not get any kind of coin-operated machine back then except from the Mob.

Have you heard of the 5 families in NYC ???
I have.

But I was raised in Connecticut, and it was also all mobbed up.

So was the union I was forced to join when I got a job at a grocery store. The AFL-CIO.

A Right To Work bill was up for debate at the state Capitol and I went to speak in favor of it. The Right to Work bill would have given us worker bees the right to opt out of the union.

About seven of us kids showed up at the Capitol, and about 500 mobsters in three piece suits showed up to oppose, including the Vice President of the union.

It became very obvious very quickly the Senate committee was bought and paid for. The Senators gushed and praised the union reps, but whenever a kid spoke, the Senators ripped them to pieces.

So when my turn came, I said, "I can see you've already made up your minds so..." and then I ripped up my speech and threw it in the air. Then I said a few words off the cuff, stood up, faced the Vice President up in the balcony and gave the union raised fist I had seen them exchanging with one another.

500 men booed at the same time.

Then two fat fucks began following me around the Capitol, so I had fun walking all the way up to and around the dome of the Capitol, with them huffing and puffing the whole time.

When I got back down to the chamber, I saw a news team interviewing the VP and so I walked over. The cameraman, god bless him, saw the two thugs following me, and swung his camera around to catch them on film.

They immediately vanished.

When the VP was done, I asked the lady reporter if she would like to hear the other side of the issue, and she put me on the news.

Here's the weird thing. It took me 45 minutes to get to work and my boss was standing out front waiting for me. He shouted, "WHAT DID YOU DO!?!"

And here I thought management was on the opposing team of the union. Oh, well.

But then he gave me a big grin for my chutzpah.

For weeks afterward, we received threatening phone calls at home. Chickenshit bastards.
