What Size? you should be able to find something less than a grand easily.

The 55" Samsung my daughter sent me last year was under $400.00.

I can't fathom why I would need anything better. :dunno:

It really doesn't matter which technology, you will be happy with any of them. But if you want to get technical:
  1. The big push right now is for the OLED. This is the same screen technology as the screen on your cellphone. This is where they make the most money. OLED is thinner and lighter since it involves only one image-forming layer which creates both the brightness of each pixel as well as its color because the pixel itself generates its own light. Downside: the OLEDs cannot produce as bright an image nor do they last as long, their color shifts as they age.
  2. The other big alternative is for a more traditional QLED display using the mini-LED system. Here you have one layer which does nothing but produce the light, another layer which produces the brightness (or darkness) and another which determines color, each separated by a thin panel of glass so they are a little thicker and heavier but still very thin and light. Most all of these displays are made by LG no matter what brand they are sold under and they produce a brilliant image with a proven technology which lasts a long time and has redundancy built in and tend to be cheaper than OLED.
I did extensive investigation of all available technologies a couple years ago and chose the latter as still the better choice. Some features worth including:
  • Mini-LED (this gives more compartments to turn off background LEDS in areas of darkness to further improve contrast)
  • Dolby Atmos sound
  • Refresh rate of 120 Hz.
  • Make sure TV connectivity meets your needs as new TVs have very little extras to spare.
I bought a TCL QLED with a TCL bluetooth soundbar for a fantastic price a couple years ago and have not regretted it.

PS: Best time of year to buy TVs is after the holidays when everything goes on sale before they bring new models out.

Replacing a 55" tv........just not sure whether to buy Mini LED, OLED, or QLED......relative said the Sony Bravura has really good sound......so looking at that now...

All mini-LEDs are QLEDS but not all QLEDS are mini-LED. Just get a mini-LED and you will have a QLED as well. The OLEDs are fine, more money, smaller market, shorter life because you are asking a single item (the OLED) to do all of the jobs, and have their place but IMO, I would maybe skip a generation and after the current TV wears out, THEN get an OLED. By then, the OLED prices will have come down, they will be improved, and the QLEDS will be getting phased out.

About Sony, you will just pay more for the name but it absolutely won't sound or look any better than the TCL. As an added bonus, I've been on the phone with TCL customer support at least a couple of times and must say they've been a pleasant surprise, good support and the people know their products.

Stay away from the house brands like Insignia.

What do those abbreviations mean? Surely you can get a good deal at Walmart even if it's made in China.

You can, just understand that models sold through Walmart are exclusive deals. They are negotiated with the manufacturer to be made to a cost and usually leave out a feature or two.

They look like other models in other stores selling for slightly more, but are discounted by Walmart because of some cost-saving alteration made for the units sold through Walmart.

Mid range Sony or Samsung can't go wrong
My bedroom t v is a Sony... Was worth the few extra dollars
Great picture

The t l c's have been getting a good reputation..

Are you more into sports, movies, video games or what?

For watching stuff with a lot of fast motion like sports you'll want something with a higher refresh rate.

what size are you looking for? If you're starting to go blind get a really big TV. It will be easier to see.

There you go, a Walmart special 55 inch 4k UHD smart TV with Roku for $228.

You are probably not going to find a better deal on a 4k UHD 55inch smart TV.

UHD 4K is a nice picture. But the speakers probably suck.

My rule for TVs is go to some place that has a wall of them and actually look at them and listen to the sound and find the one that best suits your preferences. We have a TV that my wife bought in the den I cannot stand because the sound quality is just annoying to me and I have not been able to use the settings to get it likeable. It is like it is stuck on movie theater preview sound or something. Just annoying when you are trying to watch regular TV.
