As a biophysicist I'm very interested in these mushrooms! Which molecule exactly is causing this memristive behavior? Could we extract it and put it on a chip? Because this way instead of 4 wires we could have millions.

This is pretty impressive stuff they're talking about - "real-time vehicle control from surface electromyography".

The memristor is a fascinating device. In theory it can't exist, yet it does. Leon Chua is the guy usually credited with inventing it but actually Bernard Widrow conceived it 12 years earlier.

If you have a memristive molecule inside a biological membrane, you can transition the neuron into a chaotic state. The membrane ends up looking very much like Chua's circuit:

The conductances can be made explicit with diodes, as follows, where the device in the right is an active impedance converter.

This circuit is nonlinear and chaotic, although it's still an oscillator. Its attractor looks like this:

The inductance across the membrane can be provided by a host of biological molecules, including actin and other proteins such as those found in myelin sheaths.

Mushrooms are smart! Who knew?

It looks like you guys get the psychedelic kind. I usually get the other kind - once I got surprised though. That's when I learned to respect the mushroom. 🍄
