SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded has hit off Russia's sparsely populated Far East, sending tsunami waves into Japan, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast.

Several people in Russia were injured, but none gravely, and no major damage has been reported so far. Authorities warned the risk from Wednesday's 8.8 magnitude quake could last for hours. Millions of people potentially in the path of the waves were initially told to move away from the shore or seek high ground. But the danger already appeared to be lessening, with Hawaii and parts of Japan downgrading their warnings.
The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the California Coast, including coastal areas spanning from Mendocino to Monterey counties. Previously on Tuesday the Center had issued a Tsunami Watch. An advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or dangerous waves is expected or already occurring.
OK, I woke up rather early this morning and saw the alert on NEXT DOOR. I then turned on the TV and checked with the local NBC Affiliate and watched the reporting. Apparently in Santa Clara Harbor, no giant waves, but there was a very high tide. In Sausalito, no major waves at all. Gail and I live in Marin City, but our home is on the high rim of what is called "The Bowl", The water would never have reached us;
I feel sorry for the people who live at the Kappas House Marina in Sausalito. The floating homes there are stationery and do not move under their own power. The water is somewhat shallow and any large waves would have swamped them.
