Lifting weights can have a significant positive impact on mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Here's how:

  • Endorphin Release:
    • Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, natural mood-boosting chemicals in the brain.

    • These "feel-good" hormones can alleviate feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Stress Reduction:
    • Weightlifting provides a healthy outlet for stress.

    • Focusing on the physical exertion of lifting can help to distract from worries and anxieties.

    • Exercise can also help to reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
  • Improved Sleep:
    • Regular physical activity can improve sleep quality.

    • Better sleep can significantly enhance mood, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mental well-being.
  • Increased Self-Esteem:
    • Achieving fitness goals, such as lifting heavier weights or increasing muscle mass, can boost self-esteem and confidence.

    • This can have a positive impact on overall mental health.
  • Social Interaction:
    • Weightlifting can be a social activity.

    • Joining a gym or fitness class can provide opportunities for social interaction and support.
  • Distraction:
    • Weightlifting can provide a welcome distraction from negative thoughts and rumination.

    • Focusing on the physical demands of the workout can help to take your mind off of worries and anxieties.

(Also, from my personal experience of suffering from anxiety and depression for 8 years, cleaning up my diet and committing to a training routine helped ease symptoms over time and now its finally gone. I used to hate leaving my house and feeling tired and having low confidence. Now I love going out in public and meeting new people and building good connections)

It cannot get rid of MS-like symptoms though. Canadas system is evil and future tariffs may finally wake us up.

Any type of physical activity will decrease anxiety and depression, the best for this, in my experience, is running, and the more you push yourself to run longer, and faster, the greater effect this has on decreasing anxiety and depression.

Riding a bike and lifting weights will also have this effect, but you can't beat a long, sustained run, in my opinion.

Even walking helps decrease anxiety and depression.

Those benefits are another 'drug' that must be taken regularly to remain effective. In that sense it is just another addiction. Best to get healthy the old-fashioned way, naturally, it's easier on the joints. ;)
