When I graduated from grade school basketball to HS basketball, I was surprised and bothered by the introduction of thug strategy. In grade school competition, we played the game, and there was occasional "incidental contact," when in the course of a normal play one player ran into, or conflicted with another player, and a foul was called. In high school it was normal for players to be "hacked," normally when shooting, but also at other times. Hacking is not incidental contact. It is hitting a player with the intention of intimidating him or harming him, so that he won't try what he is doing again - typically, driving down the "paint" toward the basket. The higher the level of competition in BB, the more hacking takes place. Interestingly, hacking is as common in the WNBA as it is in the NBA, and we the fans have seen it showcased in the past several months, as Caitlin has made her debut.
In hockey, there is no pretense of the contact being incidental. They just "check" players randomly as part of the game. In the playoffs, of course, that becomes a major part of the action, and the fans appear to love it. They seem to enjoy it when more skilled players are brought down by thugs, thus giving less talented teams a chance.
What would you suppose would happen if the officials penalized contact that is not incidental? Toss basketball players for one quarter for a first violation and for a game if it happens again. If you want to block a shot, then block the shot. What would the games look like? Better or worse?
The answer is obvious to me.
